OSTRAS FRESCAS

SAO PAULO - BRAZIL

The scenographic and lighting architecture project for the OSTRAS FRESCAS' party is a temporary intervention in a warehouse of an old metalworking factory from the 1960s with 9,000 of free space and 16m of ceiling height. Since the space originally had a total capacity for 6,000 people, while the party was designed for 2,500, the challenge of the project was to ask how to build the experience of proximity and intimacy of the dance floor in a space that suggested dispersion.

The deadlines of a short-term project require precision in the choice of its construction methods. Since there was only one month to design and assemble the party, the designers chose to work with the catalogs of rental materials such as boxtruss structures, reflective closing plates, modular platforms and fabric rolls.

The experience of the project begins at the entrance. We sought to reduce the scale of the warehouse by means of a 40.00 m long tunnel covered in black fabric, establishing a ceiling height of 2.20 m and contrasting with the lighting focused on the floor. At the end of this entrance path, a kind of internal cocoon appears in contrast, manifested by the intervention's central light fixture: a lampion formed by a large curved fabric measuring 120.00 m in perimeter and 5 m in height, suspended in the space by a ring of boxtrusses that also serves as support for the light, laser and smoke equipment. The combination of these three elements acting simultaneously creates a new virtual covering that helps to reduce the scale of the space and the ceiling height within this area, which is where the dance floor is formed. Service and support areas, such as bars, bathrooms, rest areas and technical corridors, were positioned to the sides and outside of the lamp, keeping them with low lighting and in contrast with the central element.

For a neutral space, the team proposed a unique experience. For a cold area, warmth. For straight lines, the curve. For a vacant shed, a dance floor, a temporary refuge.
