DOISDOIS. - BRASIL
An audiovisual work conceived as a stage piece, exploring the relationship between architecture, fire and human movement through a carefully constructed theatrical environment.
A white architectural structure emerges from complete darkness. Within it, a woman dressed in black moves between two doors set into the back wall, while a fire burns on the opposite side of the space. Her movements follow a continuous sequence of exits and entrances, creating a loop in which departure and return become part of the same gesture. This is REJEITO, a video artwork by Brazilian creative studio DOISDOIS., founded by Matías Kim and Isabella Conz. Conceived through the language of stage design, the work explores how scenography, lighting and movement can construct a narrative beyond the physical stage. Rather than using space as a passive background, DOISDOIS approaches the environment as an integral part of the composition. Architecture, light, fire and the performer's movement are carefully arranged to create a controlled visual situation in which every element contributes to the overall tension.
Constructing the Space
The scenography is built around an open architectural volume composed of four white planes: a floor, a back wall and two side walls. With no ceiling or front wall, the structure remains exposed to the viewer, establishing a frontal perspective reminiscent of a theatrical stage.
The surrounding environment is entirely blacked out. Without a visible horizon or recognizable spatial references, the structure appears isolated, almost suspended in an undefined space. The contrast between the illuminated white surfaces and the surrounding darkness reinforces the boundaries of the set, making the architectural volume the only visible environment. Two doorways are integrated into the back wall, establishing the spatial logic of the performance. They function as thresholds through which the figure enters and exits, creating a continuous relationship between presence and absence.
The simplicity of the architecture allows the composition to remain focused on the interaction between its elements, while the controlled lighting gives depth and definition to the otherwise minimal environment.
Light as a Spatial Element
Lighting plays a fundamental role in defining the atmosphere and perception of REJEITO. The white surfaces receive a soft, diffused illumination that reveals the geometry of the space while maintaining a restrained visual language.
A more concentrated source behind one of the doorways introduces a contrasting intensity, turning the opening into a luminous threshold and reinforcing the transition between the interior and the unknown space beyond. On the opposite side, the fire becomes the composition's only warm and constantly moving light source. Surrounded by scattered fragments and burnt materials, it introduces an unpredictable visual element into an otherwise controlled environment. Smoke rises from the burning remains, adding another layer of movement to the scene. Unlike the architectural structure, which remains static and precisely defined, the fire continuously changes shape and intensity.
This contrast between controlled illumination and the unstable nature of the flames becomes one of the work's central visual characteristics.
Movement, Repetition and the Meaning of Departure
At the centre of the composition, a woman dressed entirely in black moves between the two openings in the back wall.
Her figure contrasts with the white architecture, while her dark clothing visually connects her to the surrounding blackness. The movement follows a repetitive sequence: she leaves through one doorway and returns through the other, crossing the space in a continuous loop. The fire remains present throughout, independently sustaining its own movement as the figure disappears and reappears. This repetition becomes more than a formal device. It introduces a tension between staying and leaving, between the possibility of remaining in a condition and the decision to move beyond it.
Each exit suggests a definitive departure, yet another entrance follows. The threshold becomes a passage rather than an endpoint, and the action of rejecting something emerges as a recurring possibility rather than a resolved conclusion. Through this deliberately minimal choreography, DOISDOIS transforms the relationship between the performer and the architectural environment into the central narrative of the work.
Between Stage Design and Video Art
With REJEITO, DOISDOIS extends the principles of scenographic design into the medium of moving images. The work is approached as a stage piece, with the creative process encompassing spatial design, lighting definition, the arrangement of stage elements and the direction of movement.
Every component has a precise function within the composition: the architecture establishes the boundaries, the doorways define the movement, light reveals the environment, fire introduces instability and the performer activates the space through repetition.
The result is an audiovisual work in which scenography is not simply represented, but becomes the foundation of the visual narrative. By reducing the environment to a limited set of architectural and lighting elements, REJEITO demonstrates how a carefully designed space can hold an entire narrative, using light, movement and repetition to explore the tension between remaining and moving on.
